Books: History

A remarkable book that guides my choices for structure, settings, garden rooms, and plant material to define authentic feeling "revival gardens"for antique houses and reproduction homes in historic settings. Usually data is missing for a historic garden restoration. So I strive to create a "revival garden" that feels as if it was built in an earlier era and evolved to present day.
Invaluable for the list of plants available by period. I look up the approximate date of the "revival garden" that I'm creating, note the plants used, and then create my plant list using modern equivalents. Often native plants were used so it makes it easy to make the garden with a historical and environmentally regional theme.
Her wonderful collection of images painted by contemporaries of the garden makers gives me visual clues to create authentic feeling American "revival gardens". Grandmothers gardens are typically filled with flowering shrubs, vines, trees, and perennials.
