July 2004 - Early Summer Gardens
I perhaps owe having become a painter
to flowers
- Claude Monet
Fascination … becoming totally engaged
in something … losing your “self”… practicing fascination
is surely a form of mindfullness … and fascinated is what
I become with my gardens … each morning I can’t wait to
look out the windows and later stroll through the gardens
to witness the simple beauty of a single flower and enjoy
the splendor of many flowers combining with each other.
Adding to the total sensual experience is the light …
seeing the same gardens at different times of day in sun
or shadow. The symphony of birdsong, fragrance, and the
texture of wet or dry grass on my feet. The touch of different
foliage as I lean into weed or deadhead. All combine to
reinforce the wonder and joy of simply being. An article
I read in one of my garden history classes by Rachel and
Stephen Kaplan spoke of the act of fascination as being
one of the ingredients for a “mini-restorative” experience
that gardening can offer. I agree. Participating in the
wonder , the awe inspiring experience that the beauty
of flowers can bring is a “mini-restorative” experience
for me. Below, I share images that I love and wish you
much fascination experiencing your own gardens.
